A Carrot, an Egg, and a Cup of Coffee

I find this very insightful and motivating story on the net and I like to share it with you :)

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed that as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes, she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.
Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?" "Carrots, eggs, and coffee," the daughter replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity—boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?"
Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?
Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

R.I.P Steve Jobs

Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do. - Steve Jobs

Thoughts Up in the Air

How much does your life weigh? Imagine for a second that you're carrying a backpack. I want you to pack it with all the stuff that you have in your life... you start with the little things. The shelves, the drawers, the knickknacks, then you start adding larger stuff. Clothes, tabletop appliances, lamps, your TV... the backpack should be getting pretty heavy now. You go bigger. Your couch, your car, your home... I want you to stuff it all into that backpack. Now I want you to fill it with people. Start with casual acquaintances, friends of friends, folks around the office... and then you move into the people you trust with your most intimate secrets. Your brothers, your sisters, your children, your parents and finally your husband, your wife, your boyfriend, your girlfriend. You get them into that backpack, feel the weight of that bag. Make no mistake your relationships are the heaviest components in your life. All those negotiations and arguments and secrets, the compromises. The slower we move the faster we die. Make no mistake, moving is living. - From the movie Up in the Air

I’m restless. Already planning my next escape to some new destination. I have this constant hunger for something more, something different, something extraordinary and exiting. Moving is living.

Caviar & Dreams

Sitting in my kitchen eating caviar and thinking about all my plans and goals for this year. Tomorrow I will begin a new life. There will be some new routines but most impotently more focus on the things I want rather the things that I don’t want. The Law of Attraction suggests that when we focus on the things we want, we begin to attract those things into our lives. Works the other way around as well, that’s why it is so important to choose our thoughts carefully and not waist time on the negative. It is not easy but essential to learn what to hold on to and what to let go.

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.

Happy New Year!

I know that New Year’s resolutions are far easier to make than they are to keep and that so many people start out strong with a goal in mind, but weaken along the way. However that doesn’t stop me from carrying on with this tradition that dates back to the early Babylonians. It’s nice to have a fresh start and I think it is very important to always striving to becoming a better version of yourself. So in 2011  I will be bolder, love more and dream bigger than ever before!

May all of your dreams and wishes come true and may you all have a very successful and Happy New Year! Cheers! XOXO Nicky ♡♡♡

What to do?

There's not enough free space left on my blog to post new photos, so I have a dilemma. Should I buy more space or start up a new blog? I rather keep this one but Terms and Conditions agreement is sooo long I can bring myself to read it. Apparently I can buy 20 GB for only $5.00 USD per year, but I’m skeptical. I’m worried that it means that they are going to continue to withdraw $50 from my account for the rest of my life, even if I no longer have a blog :D Any thoughts on the subjec? I appreciate any tips or advice you can give me to help me to decide what to do. That is of course if you are interested in continuing reading my blog :) I hope you do!

Wish you all a very nice Sunday afternoon! XOXO Nicky

Winter Magic

(Images taken December 2009)

I’m not a big fan of Christmas but I do love the idea of Christmas if you know what I mean. I would like Christmas to be like in the movies, peaceful and magical. Unfortunately it can be a stressful time with high ambitions and some disappointments. I’m a real summer person at heart and the only thing I truly love about winter is snow. Snow, and ice covering the grounds, and the sleeping trees, creates almost a new world. At night when the light reflects unto the snow it makes it glitter like diamonds turning the parks and the streets into a fairytale-like scenery. I think its amazing how nature works in this world and  I always take time to take in its beauty.

Letting go

The most important thing to remember is this: To be ready at any moment to give up what you are for what you might become.
